The world is in the midst of a materials revolution. Designed and created materials have transformed every aspect of modern living, and advances in engineered materials are crucial to the continued vitality of countless industries— including aerospace, automotive, biomedical, chemical, construction, electronics, energy, and telecommunications. We' re surrounded by examples of these advances: Smaller and faster devices in the electronics industry are almost entirely the result of materials improvements. Modern metal alloys and strong ceramics are critical to high-performance engines, energy conversion, and pollution control.
We are a small, dynamic department in the heart of this revolution. Our broad-based, student-centered department provides the highest quality educational and research experience for students, with many opportunities for interdisciplinary and international pursuits. Building on our rich history, our faculty, staff and students are advancing the discipline to meet the needs of an increasingly technology-based society.
