The Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft (KIND) was initiated in 2004, as one of the new Institutes of Nanoscience founded by the Kavli Foundation . At that time, it was the only Kavli Institute established outside the US. Currently there are about 15 Kavli Institutes, with nanoscience institutes at Cornell, Harvard, Caltech, and Delft. The Institute at Delft consists of two departments, both also part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Delft University of Technology :The Department of Quantum Nanoscience and the Department of Bionanoscience . The Institute involves about 40 scientific faculty members and about 250 people in total. Current director isCees Dekker .
The Institute aims to be a quality-driven, intellectually stimulating institute with a broad scope of research in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The emphasis in our research, which ranges from single-molecule biophysics to quantum information processing of nanoscale devices, is on novel concepts and fundamental breakthroughs. Colloquia are organized for which we invite high level speakers who provide a broadly accessible colloquium and who typically interact with many members of the Institute during a multiple-day visit.
